Complete with a rich visual chronology of the artist's encounters abroad, alongside over one hundred of Hodgkins' key paintings and drawings, the book is an illuminating journey that moves us from place to place through the writings of a number of distinguished national and international art historians, curators and critics: Frances Spalding (University of Cambridge, England), Alexa Johnston (Auckland-based writer and curator), Elena Taylor (University of New South Wales, Australia), Antoni. Unable to afford London, Hodgkins travelled to France, first to Brittany and then further south, working in an Impressionist manner, especially in her capture of light in the landscape, and her intimate portraits of mothers and working women, reminiscent of Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt. She spent three months in Morocco from 1902 to 1903, where the pared-back white cubic buildings, their walls reflecting light, allowed her further insight into what she later called 'the modern problem'. Frances Hodgkins is regarded as New Zealand's most famous expatriate painter. Born in Dunedin, she became a successful artist in England from the 1930s, many years before her avant-garde style.

In March 1947, a few weeks before her 78th birthday, Frances Hodgkins was admitted to a hospital in Dorchester, England where she died a couple of months later.
